The
Everest07 Expedition departs the UK on 1st September
2007, heading to Kathmandu, Nepal. From here we
will head into the heart of the Himalayas and
begin the long trek at high altitude to Everest
Base Camp and back.
The trek is far from transport and normal infrastructure,
taking in tiny settlements and mountain pass
trading points along the route. High-slung rope
bridges cross deep glacial river valleys and
the giant peaks of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse,
Ama Dablam are a constant backdrop to colourful
Buddhist prayer flags and monasteries.
The terrain is mountainous and changes daily
with incredible views if you are not climbing
through cloud at the time! The team hope to
Summit above 5,400 metres (18,000’) where sub
zero temperatures and oxygen parched air make
progress slow but rewarding.
The team will learn about the culture and people
along the route, sharing with the Sherpa people
and meeting other races dependent on the mountain
trade routes to maintain their wilderness way
of life. The expedition is not for fundraising,
but is contributing to environmental and micro
economy projects in the Sargamatha region. The
expedition will be carbon neutral and subject
to environmental impact and comprehensive risk
assessments.
Whilst the primary aim is to complete the base
camp trek and a series of peaks en route, there
is a further goal. The team have specialist
skills to carry out an intrepid attempt at a
World First with Girlguiding's new hot air balloon
if conditions allow. Details of this will be
updated as we go, so watch the site as time
goes by.
This will be a bunch of Girlguides showing
what their developing skills, training and support
can achieve in a world challenge. Discover your
potential.
