14th September 2007 - The Ladies In Red

Today the team took the opportunity to help celebrate Nepale Ladies Day in Pattan's Durbar Square. The 14th September sees the celebration of women in the Nepalese culture, and the streets and squares were full of red saris and laughter.

Whilst we have grown use to the unique (and in its own way thrilling) form of driving here in Kathmandu, today's taxi ride to Durbar Square was again full of excitement and provided a great opportunity to see parts of Kathmandu we had yet to experience. The square itself is full of ancient temples and monuments both interesting and beautiful, and with today's celebrations exuding a party atmosphere with music and dancing. With time available to us we also took the opportunity to wander through the back streets, stumbling across food stalls and other hidden temples within the Pattan area.

A fantastic time was had by all, allowing us to fully appreciate the rich culture and friendliness of the Nepalese.

Alice was able to continue her reaquaintance with old colleagues from her time in Nepal and today visited Patan Community Based Rehabilitation Centre where a mural by the students showing the difficulties of education for special needs in Nepal was being shown before its presentation to the Prime Minister tomorrow. She was also able to see some of the children she used to work with including Bijesh who has passed his school certificate writing with his left foot.

It's hot and humid in Kathmandu at the moment so the swimming pool has become a welcome retreat for after the daily adventures. Today included a swim during the monsoon rain. It was drier in the pool than out.
